The rose garden has collected and planted about 250 species and more than 30000 roses, including many world-famous varieties. In 1789, the planting and cultivation of roses in Mermason rose garden had begun to take shape. Joseph Redwood, a painter of flower atlas, was warmly invited by Josephine. He spent 20 years drawing the world's first rose atlas. It contains most of the rose varieties in the Mermason rose garden, including ancient wild roses (French roses), medieval roses (white roses) and various rose types introduced from Asia.

Roses are never lack of people who love them. A rose can be seen as organization and life in the eyes of botanists, or romance, and love in the eyes of lovers, or profit and value in the eyes of economists, or the root and evolution of national civilization in the eyes of historians and archaeologists.
