Moritzburg Castleis a stunning Baroque palace in Saxony, originally built as a hunting lodge in 1542. Over the years, it has undergone extensive additions and remodeling. The striking yellow and orange-red castle, with more than 200 rooms, sits gracefully on a rectangular artificial island surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens.
Located just 2 km from the castle, Wildgehege Moritzburg is a wildlife reserve and zoo, home to a variety of forest animals that are hard to spot in the wild. Visitors can see over 30 species, including owls, lynx, wolves, deer, and elk. A fun addition for all ages is the chance to feed the animals by purchasing grain at the ticket booth. A raised wooden pavilion provides an excellent vantage point to view the wolf enclosures from above.
Each winter, Moritzburg Castle hosts a captivating exhibition titled Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella, which brings the magic of the classic Czech-German fairy tale to life. The exhibition features costumes, props, and behind-the-scenes insights from the beloved film.
One of the most intriguing props is the original saddle that Cinderella used to ride to meet her prince. Although the exhibition was on a brief hiatus during our visit, it has since returned, making it the perfect reason for another trip to Moritzburg!
